Attended Shane Justin’s grand opening in Williamsburg. The merch and the ambiance was amazing. The snake print, fur and sequins pieces filled the building. I loved everything, especially these boots next to me in the photo above. I definitely plan to make my way back there this week, located at 225 Roebling St Brooklyn, NY, 11211. I was really taken back when I came across Brandon Blackwood’s “End Systematic Racism” bags. Not only are they super stylish but the message behind the inspiration of the bag is so needed, now more than ever.

Attention to detail is so crucial. Styling is literally creating art. The concept of this look is “dreamy, bright ideas.” I chose to use a vibrant and sparkly blue bandeau to bring life to the pinstripe suit. My makeup artist did an amazing job at delivering what I requested: a playful mix of blues, purples and whites clouds creating the illusion of pretty blue skies that bounces off of the entire look.

Styled in MG’s signature logo cropped denim jacket, custom made galaxy mid length dress and a transparent heel. Ember Niche’s “Sun Marci” sunglasses was a perfect touch. They compliment the look so well. Fun fact: this was their first frame released! I also added a pop of silver: oversized hoops, an ankle bracelet and vintage plated midi rings.

Savagexfenty is about inclusivity, acceptance and diversity. I support Rihanna’s brand because of that. I respect brands that know the importance of spreading the importance of why we should all feel sexy in our skin, no matter the shade, shape or size.

#BucketHatSeries

Picture
During this hectic yet still moment we’re living in, we have a lot of time to not only reflect but to really sit down and tap into our crafts. We have nothing but time so why not come up with fresh and innovative ideas. I’ve challenged myself to find ways to stay creative but to stay safe and stick to safety precautions. The idea to style my household came to mind following the idea of a bucket hat series. I have a very 90’s inspired style and it’s probably very noticeable in my work with clients. I love what a bucket hat can do and it’s the perfect season for it now that we’re approaching summer. I will be continuing this series all through summer so look out for more looks and new faces.

Style is the art of Fashion

Picture
Sometimes I get asked what’s the difference between being a style blogger and fashion blogger. Why do I prefer to call myself a style blogger? The reason for that is because style and fashion are 2 different things. Style is self expression and is the art of fashion. The different looks that designers make come from a feeling, it is simply them expressing self through the creation. The looks that we pull as stylists is expression, whether it be through prints, shades or vintage accessories. We all tell different stories through our sense of style and that creates fashion. I fell in love with the art of style because in my darkest moments and time of questioning my identity and purpose, it helped my find myself. It is a safe space to create and express myself. That resulted in a boost of confidence, self love, continual growth and the recognition of purpose. Art reflects the artist’s mind, creativity, story and individuality. Style is an art. I am the artist. The art of fashion.

A BOOHOO LOOK

COZY for the win! I love to constantly switch it up and play with different styles but when it really comes down to it, there’s nothing better than to be fashionably cozy. I wore a gray TM CLOTHING sweatsuit to day 2 of WWD’s Style Dimension panel discussion. I sported the look with Pretty Little Thing’s “NEW YORK CITY” oversized, long puffer jacket, Boohoo’s cream mini-fur bag and iridescent platform sneakers. This is hands down one of my favorite looks and from the feedback on social media, you all loved it as well! ❤️ TM Clothing does indeed target streetwear lovers like myself and the style of the merch is very fashion forward. Get your merch @Touchmoney_clothing on Instagram. Read my interview with CEO, Tommie Hobson Jr in the link below!

I attended WWD’s STYLE Dimension panel discussion wearing Boohoo’s oversized pant suit in blue. It is safe to say I’m obsessed with suits. While searching for NYFW looks, I came across this suit on the site and automatically fell in love with the color as well as the fit. I knew I wanted to add a print but couldn’t really put my finger on it. Then BOOM: I scrolled onto the cheetah printed fur bucket hat. Realizing that the suit and hat were a look alone, I chose to keep the rest of the fit very simple. I kept it neutral, wearing a white turtle neck bodysuit for a perfect and clean fit. In hand, I carried a cream and black Aldo box bag to play off of the fur bucket hat.

Creative thoughts

Picture
I’m sitting here brainstorming on ways to perfect this blog for all of my readers. I randomly thought about this:

As creatives, we have a million thoughts that cloud our minds. That gets hella frustrating at times but we should be grateful. Grateful for concept, grateful for vision, grateful for creativity. Style is certainly self expression but the art of being a stylist is creative direction. Knowing how to put different pieces together and conquering the challenge of making it work. Having a sharp eye for the perfect shade, the perfect print, the perfect FIT. Being able to sit back and admire your own work is the best part. It shows you how your mind works. I love being a creative.

This blog is not only a platform for all readers to refer to for styling services, style advice or fashion updates. It is also a platform to connect. What is your creative field? What helps you get into your creative space? Do you get overwhelmed as a creative? Let’s chat.

SPORTY SPICE

Picture
Picture
The complexity of my style keeps me on my toes when it comes to switching it up. Some days I like to get glammed up, fitted dresses and heels. But other days like today, I like to keep it chill. I do a lot of running back and forth at work and I'm constantly lifting mannequins so I aim for comfort while targeting STYLE. How fashion forward could a sweatshirt and sweats get? Zara is good for a good grapic! I'm obsessed with this piece because of the balloon sleeve and vibrant color scheme. Sported this with black sweatpants and gray and white adidas.

Plot On Your Next Move

Picture
I'm claiming 2020 to be the year of prosperity, creativity, growth and success. That requires a whole lot of discipline, consistent dedication and PLANNING. When I first created this site, the purpose was to make a platform for myself where I could express myself through words and style. That was in 2012. Fast forward 8 years later, KILLASTYLEZ has morphed into a site where you can book styling services, stay up-to-date with trends, networking opportunities and you can continue to follow my journey into the fashion industry. It excites me to recognize the growth and I am so appreciative to all of you who take the time to read my content and engage.

We all possess gifts and have a purpose FOR A REASON. It is crucial to set goals, make a plan and execute. Read that again: SET GOALS, MAKE A  PLAN AND EXECUTE! Write it down and manifest everything you envision for your life. It sounds crazy but I'm watching it happen for myself. As long as you put all of the work in and stick to your plan, things will fall into place for you.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON IT

Picture
This post is for those of you who are also chasing after what you aspire to be in life. I know it’s not easy, I’m going through it too. But hard work pays off in the end and the harder you go, the FARTHER you go. Prayer, consistency, perseverance, determination, creativity and focus and more prayer will take you places beyond what you can even imagine. Things will fall into place right before your eyes. It’s crazy. Tunnel out and walk by faith. ❤️

STANDOUT and Embrace the things that make you, YOU.

Picture
Style is all about expressing yourself and feeling good about it. One of the main keys to genuine happiness is self acceptance. Do you ever question yourself as to what your purpose is and who you are? If your answer is no, I challenge you to do so. That moment of self reflection will lead you to recognizing how dope it is to be you. Someone asked me what made me get into fashion. It goes beyond my interest in trends and my love for styling, it gets way more deeper than that. I never shy away from sharing that I used to have very low self-esteem. It's something that everyone can relate to so I love to discuss how I made the steps to overcoming that. Instead of continuing to hold myself back from reaching my highest potential, I chose to step out of my comfort zone and work on getting to know who Sho really is. Learning about all of the things that make me, me, figuring out my personal sense of style and most importantly learning to ACCEPT MYSELF helped me to build the confidence I have today. This has encouraged me to help others do the same through the styling services I provide and Killa Stylez Blog.

You've got to realize that you're given a gift and the only person that can utilize your gift is YOU. It belongs to you and only you. Why try to fit in a crowd when you can standout and be yourself? Figure out your "Why" in life and watch how much happier you'll become.

Fashion Bomb Daily’s “The Faby’s Awards”

Picture
Kicked off my weekend in this head turning gown, Fashionnova’s “Shine through the Night” gown. Fashion Bomb Daily’s award show was amazing. We got to honor all of the hard working fashion stylists, hair stylists, designers, fashion icon of the year and even activist of the year. I really enjoyed connecting with everyone. The level of passion in the room was at an all time high.
Picture
It’s always a pleasure seeing Claire! I always leave her events feeling refreshed, encouraged, inspired and even more determined. I commend her for always successfully bringing a room together to celebrate the love for fashion and the talent, creativity and passion that goes into the evolution of fashion. Networking creates so much space for building. You never know who does what and who is who. So it’s always awesome to attend these events.

HOW I BALANCE WORKING A 9-5 &WORKING TOWARDS
MY FASHION CAREER

Picture
LISTEN ! A lot of people think that there’s no way to do both. “It’s either you quit your 9-5 and pursue your dreams or you lose out on what your life could be for a 9-5.” That’s so UNTRUE. There are so many people that have taken the risk to just focus on their passion and I really admire that. That takes a lot of faith and it speaks volumes. However, I am currently working a 9-5, I will be starting school in January and I’m working towards my career all at the same time! It took me some time to learn how to balance but after years of searching for what the key is to succeed in doing this, I’ve found the key y’all. Several. — killastylez.weebly.com/blog/how-i-balance-working-a-9-5-working-towards-my-fashion-career

If the sleeves can’t speak for me, I don’t need it

Picture
Lately, I’ve had a fascination with SLEEVES. I’m obsessed with how elegant and modish it looks. I wore Zara’s “Trust the Flow” puffy sleeves top with a navy blue zippered-pencil skirt (Zara) and Guess’ black over the knee boots. Loved everything about this look. Couldn’t tell me NOTHING.

For all of my jean lovers, this top is certainly for you. I would suggest either navy blue, gray or black denim. Depending on what you’re into or feel most comfortable with, I recommend a pump, bootie or like I wore, an over the knee boot. Try Leather!

The sleeves are floral printed and the message is VALID: “Trust the Flow.” How much perfect could a shirt really get? Get yours at Zara.

Genderless Fashion

Picture
Claire Sulmers, Founder and CEO of Fashion Bomb Daily
I was so happy to discuss Genderless Fashion with Founder and CEO of Fashion Bomb Daily and designer Sarah Sokol! Today, we stand against the societal norms in fashion and stand for individuality. Everyone should be able to wear whatever makes them feel good. That’s the point of Fashion which is built off of style. Style is a form of self expression and we have the right to express who we are! Watch my interviews here!

TWEED’S IN

Picture
Summer 2019 has come to an end and the Fall is now upon us. A lot of us fashionistas are so excited to layer up and really get creative with different pieces! Are you ready for leather on leather, plaid, fashion forward capes and Asymmetrical necklines? I know I am. However, I’m definitely looking forward to rocking one trend you may overlook.... TWEED.

Tweed has made its way in to closets since the 18th century, literally. It was first woven in the 1840’s and has become one of the biggest trends this year. Designers such as Tory Burch, Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Versace have used the woolen fabric to create some of Fall and Winter’s hottest wear.

Vintage Street Fair

Picture
My friends and I had such an amazing time! I got to speak with some of the vendors who filled the park with awesome Vintage pieces. Special thanks to Janky Vintage, Nonno NYC and XAMAN Vintage BK for taking the time to share information about their brands. Eva, owner of Janky Vintage, described her shop to be funky! Can't disagree with that. It gave me a mix of "janky" vibes, from the 70's sporting free-spirited and floral clothing (like the bag below) to the early 90's boom boxes and acid washed Lee denim. It took me back to such a laid back era. I haven't seen a walk-man in who knows long and they had it! So dope.
Picture
Follow @JankyVintage on instagram!

Sarah recently launched her brand Nonno NYC! She has worked with vintage companies for 6-7 years such as The Break and is passionate about connecting with designers who are inspired by vintage pieces. I'm usually not into prints (ie. cheetah) but I could not resist! I actually purchased a cow printed hand bag. Yes! Me! I fell in love with the bag as soon I laid eyes on it. Can't wait to share what look I come up with. I will be certainly tagging Sarah. Follow her brand on instagram @Nonno.nyc !
Picture
Two of my favorite things are: leather and flare. The set above is from XAMAN Vintage BK (@xamanvintage_bk on Instagram.) It was so nice meeting Ginger, who sorts vintage pieces from Arizona, Texas and Mexico. Her brand is very Westernized and I love it. Western fashion is all year-round. We even wear it during the summer for events like coachella.

Picture
This vintage fair was so dope to me because of my love for vintage. I understand fashion repeats itself but not every piece makes it’s comeback. That’s what makes vintage so special, so rare, so dope!

Being a Native American woman is so empowering. I’m proud of our heritage and even the struggles my people faced. Native Americans fought, bled and died for this land. It’s insane to even think about how they had to feel in that time. My grandmother was so big on staying true and consistent in celebrating our culture. Every summer my family and I would camp out on Shinnecock reservation. I was a young girl and I looked forward to that every summer.

To this very day, Aaliyah was the best to ever do it. Her balance between sex appeal and tomboy has always been everything to me. Growing up watching iconic vids like Rock the Boat, One in a million, Are you that Somebody, etc would excite me as a young girl. I felt it. The music wasn’t the only thing that would speak to me, it was the style. I could always relate to it which is why it has stuck with me. Aaliyah truly left a mark forever🌹

The Black Woman— we are such powerful beings. I love this picture because it embodies strength, divine beauty, joy and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her daughter. To have the strength to carry someone for 9 intense months and give birth to that little person is amazing. It is God given power. As women we are naturally nurturing, passionate and super emotional beings and that’s okay. On the contrary, we are forced to control our emotions daily and charge at life’s challenges head on. Whether it be issues with family, relationships, work or even societal views.

As black women, we are doubted and straight up taken for granted. We are abused mentally, physically and emotionally. We tend to be given the short hand of the stick and then questioned “Why do black women have attitudes?” The nerve of us. We bottle so much in. In fact, we’re subconsciously taught to do that from young. It’s a cycle.

This blog is an open field to all but my priority is to always inspire and uplift women. All black women need to hear and repeat this:
First thing first. You are BEAUTIFUL. You are STRONG. You are a QUEEN. You always have been and you always will be. It is in our blood. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. It is okay to express yourself. Do it! We are destined for greatness and are on the brink of it! Be 1,001% confident in yourself and all that you do because it starts with you. And let’s uplift one another while breaking the cycle of being torn down and mistreated. We are GOLD✨. From this moment on....
WE KNOW OUR WORTH .

We are fearless. We are fierce. We are beautiful. We are bold. We are warriors. Our bodies do not define us. We do not have to settle for poor treatment. Do not feel belittled, we are everything and some. We are needed. We are God’s gift.
We are so worth it.

Tibetan Fashion

Picture
#blog #it #monday TIBETAN FASHION 👘 --

It was really cool to meet Tenson, a Tibetan who taught me some things about Tibetan fashion. These bags were all handmade in the Himalayas, using expensive metals and bejeweled with many gems.

Intrigued, I took it upon myself to look further into the history of their fashion. I learned that their trends are based on profession and climate conditions. In the warmer regions, the Tibetan women wear bright colored robes made of woolen cloth, silks, satins, cotton and “pulu” (a woolen fabric.) The garment is normally worn with a long, wide sleeved shirt and the ladies are always sure to tie a bangdian (a Tibetan apron) around the waist. However, women farmers do not wear sleeves so that they are cool and comfortable while working. Men’s fashion is somewhat standardized where as women have more options in color and style. In colder regions, Fox or sheepskin hats are worn. They use fabric such as black velveteen, corduroy and woolen cloths to keep warm. Accessories really do add to a look and these ladies know it for sure. Their jewelry is made of amber, agate, jadeite, pearl and ivory. They accessorize with bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings and for festivals, Women wear headdresses called Bazhu and Baguo. I think it’s very dope that they express their love and pride for their culture through their sense of fashion. From the people who hand-make the bags, garments, etc. to the people who wear them, they all boldly express themselves and that is exactly what style is about.

Fun fact: “It is a fashion statement to wear to wear the left sleeve only and expose the right shoulder.” #blog #blogging #tibetan #tibetanfashion #culture #fashion #style #blogger

The Happiest Hour

SPORTY SPICE Today, Posh Tomorrow

Picture
When I’m asked to define my sense of style, I can never describe it by using one word. It really all depends on my mood. I seriously have no in-between, it’s either I’m giving super girly or the cute tomboy. It’s pretty obvious what the mood was today. I’m inspired by beautiful women who know how to balance femininity and swag, such as the late great Aaliyah, Rihanna and my favorite Spice Girl Sporty Spice. When shopping, I have the weird tendency to end up in the men’s department from time to time. I swear menswear has the illest graphic tees and hoodies. Tracksuits are definitely trending this year and I’m totally here for it. I love to show off these curves but sometimes comfy and cozy is a must.

Style is a very organic form of self expression and I love it. Every day is a different look. You set the mood.

Woman.

Picture
Every woman should feel BOLD, FEARLESS, BEAUTIFUL and SECURE IN THEMSELVES. We deserve it. We deal with so many different issues on a daily basis and sometimes those challenges can lead us to doubt ourselves. I’ve made the decision to take full control over my mindset and my view on myself. No, it didn’t happen overnight but the process of getting to know who I am as a woman made me realize it is absolutely okay to accept me for who I am. I’m made in God’s image, how more perfect can it get? It doesn’t matter what others view you as but what YOU view yourself to be. So if no one else told you, I’m telling you do as you please, wear whatever makes you feel good and make your life what YOU want life to be.

Mix and Match

Picture
This look is somewhat complex. I went for what I call “business super-casual” and threw in a hint of chic by adding the red lip with the high, sleek ponytail. I’ve become so addicted to ponytails because it looks good with everything and it’s quick and easy.

Now, Get This! That is not a blazer!! I reused Boohoo’s mocha blazer dress (worn Christmas) with Boohoo’s snake print bodysuit, TOPSHOP Mom jeans and gold filaz. The point of your wardrobe is to use it! Yes, we have to continue to add pieces in order to keep building our wardrobes but the real challenge is to mix and match those pieces to build different looks.

What’s some of the stand out pieces in your wardrobe that you can have some fun with?

Shop Trendy and Affordable looks @Boohoo

Picture
Finding an unbeatable BARGAIN is one of the most fun things about shopping. Online shopping has certainly become the norm and the upside of that is that you can always find a sale. Boohoo is one of the top sites that I always suggest. They keep up with trend, I’ve never had an issue with the material or fit of items and shipping is always on point.

Whenever I shop whether it be in store or online, I try to go in with an idea of what look I’m going for. It makes the process much quicker and easier opposed to aimlessly searching. However, we all have our days where we may not know or have an exact idea of where to start. What I find really cool about their site is that they have an “Inspire Me” tab. This tab will lead you to new arrivals, what’s trending this season and their latest campaigns. It’s very directive and I’m sure it’ll assist you in figuring out what it is you may need to add to your wardrobe or even an idea for an overall look. Boohoo provides a variety of styles and is broken down by category.

Before creating the look above, I had in mind a blazer dress, a pump and a clutch. I searched “blazer dress” and ending up finding this satin belted blazer romper for $33! It comes in red, navy blue and black. To make it more fun than business casual, I wore a neon pink heel ($40.) Very effortless but classy and AFFORDABLE. The shoes also come in green and orange. Super cute and all under $100.

Successful bargain shopping is all about how you throw different pieces together. Yes, it does require patience but it’s so worth it. The weather is getting warmer and we’re getting closer to summer. Check out https://us.boohoo.com/ for cute looks for day to day, date night, work and/or even rack up on your swimwear. Everything is 80% off today!

You’re like, really pretty

Picture
Boohoo has become my favorite go-to for so many different reasons. 1. I always find what I need. Even statement pieces like the blazer above. 2. There’s almost always a 60% sale going on. 3. I’ve never had a problem with shipping and the packaging is super cute. And 4. I mentioned 60% off right?!

I’m big on bargaining when I shop for myself as well as when I do personal styling. Believe it or not, this complete look is only a little over $100! I wore Boohoo’s “Leopard Lapel Tartan” blazer ($30) with black front pleated trousers ($12.) I searched for a bag that would compliment the look I was going for and ended up finding the “structured handle box cross body bag” for only $18. You can also purchase it in tan and nude. I always get good wear out of Fashionnova’s transparent heel ($40) being that it’s a clear show. Last but not least, everyone knows how I feel about a shade. I bought these slim cat eyed frames from Forever 21 for $6.

Putting fun, affordable looks can be a challenge but the turn out will always amaze you.

Conversation with Dapper Dan

Picture
Yes, that is me hugging on Dapper Dan and embracing the moment. You know, the ICON I spoke about last week. No big deal.

Macy’s on 34th street held “Conversation with Dapper Dan” this week and I attended Wednesday’s session. It was everything plus more than what I expected it to be. He spoke about the struggles he faced while building his business, tying it into Black history. As “minorities,” we need to set the bar and go after our dreams as well as push to make change for US.

Inspired is very much an understatement. This man has changed fashion forever and has played a huge role in why I go hard for this blog and my career in wardrobe styling. I’m going to make a difference in the lives of women, fashion and the world.

212 Day !

Attending 212 Day was SO FUN. I got to meet so many people, photographers, bloggers, music artists, etc. The venue was beautiful and I loved the feel of the block party vibe. Food from Harlem venues were served all night, the drinks were flowing, the performances were awesome and style filled the room.
Picture
The panel discussion included Jerry Lorenzo, Teyana Taylor, ASAP Rocky, Dapper Dan and hosted by Fab 5 Freddy. I enjoyed listening to the stories of everyone’s upbringing in Harlem and was inspired by each journey. They all made it very clear that they would not be the people they are today if it wasn’t for Harlem and the struggles they had to face growing up. In addition to discussing the history of Harlem fashion, King Dapper Dan shun light on the fact that our culture has such an impact on fashion. Loved that. This model had me SHOOKD when she graced the runway. Her walk was straight fierce and look at this piece! My manager Brian Lamont and I even got to chop it up with the awesome designer of this line.
Picture
I got the opportunity to do some networking and take some pictures after Fashion Mansion’s first show. The show was nothing short of amazing. I loved that each designer brought something dope to the runway in a different way. From gorgeous head pieces to elegant gowns. Everything was phenomenal.

I had the absolute pleasure of working with the designer of Li Li’s Creations, Li Li! Her brand is full of art that is African inspired. She hand picks each print and adds a touch of vintage flair. Her line includes skirts, dresses, tops and casual wear. What I love about her brand is that it promotes elegance, power and beauty. While prepping the models for the Short Hair Don’t Care runway event, I couldn’t help but stare at how graceful all of the pieces were. She designed the skirt in the picture as well.
